![]() It is not technically an illuminated manuscript because it makes no use of gold, silver, or any colored illustrations but it is the oldest European work which uses decorated capital letters to begin each page - a practice which would come to define illuminated manuscripts. The earliest illuminated manuscript is the Vergilius Augusteus of the 4th century CE which exists in seven pages of what must have been a much larger book of Virgil's works. The word book comes from the Old English boc meaning 'a written document' or 'written sheet' and the texts produced on vellum in time came to be decorated with flourishes and illustrations. The vellum works of Europe became the standard definition of a book for centuries. Just as the sailor yearns for port, the writer longs for the last line” (37). ![]() Scholar Giulia Bologna notes how many manuscripts include small notations written in the margins such as “This page was not copied slowly”, “I don't feel well today”, “This parchment is certainly hairy” and a long observation regarding having to sit for hours hunched over a writing table: “Three fingers write, but the entire body toils. It is clear, from brief comments written on some pages, that the monks were not always happy about their duties. A scriptore-monk was expected to show up for work no matter the weather, their state of health, or interest in a project. The work was long and tedious, carried out in the silence of rooms lit only by narrow windows which were cold in winter and sultry in warmer weather. Monks wrote with quill pens and boiled iron, tree bark, and nuts to make black ink other ink colors were produced by grinding and boiling different natural chemicals and plants. The text was written first in black ink (or gold or another appropriate color for the subject) between the ruled lines on the page and then would be given to another monk to proofread for errors this second monk – or perhaps a third – would then add titles in blue or red ink and then pass the page on to the illuminator who would add images, color, and the requisite gold illumination. The pages of the Codex Argenteus were dyed purple, to denote the elevated subject matter, and the work was written & illustrated in silver & gold ink. One monk rarely worked on a page to completion but rather traded with others in the room. ![]() The director would make sure that the monks remained at work, quietly, and continued until their pages were done. ![]() Scribes worked only in the day and could not have candles or lamps near the manuscripts for fear of fire. Monks were involved in every aspect of a book's production from processing the vellum to the final product.Ī director would distribute pages to be done to the monks in the room and then remain to supervise and maintain the rule of silence. The scriptorium was a large room with wooden chairs and writing tables which angled upwards to hold manuscript pages. From the 5th to the 13th century CE monasteries were the sole producers of books. Some books no doubt arrived with the monks who came to live there but most were produced at the site by monks known as scriptores in rooms called scriptoriums. Initially, however, they were made by monks in monasteries, abbeys, and priories probably first in Ireland and then Britain and the continent.Įvery monastery was required to have a library according to the rules of St. Manuscript_nerd (CC BY) HOW THEY WERE MADEĪs books became more popular, they were produced by secular merchants and sold in books stalls and stores. Paper would not be accepted by Europeans until the 11th century. Paper and papyrus were considered un-Christian by the medieval church and their use was discouraged as these materials had been used by pagan writers in the past and were used by “heathens” of the east at this time. European monks favored vellum and this became their standard material for the works which would become known as illuminated manuscripts. Parchment made of calfskin was called vellum, was of much higher quality as a writing surface, and so became more popular. The Chinese had been using paper for almost a century when people in Asia Minor developed writing surfaces made of animal hides (sheep or goats) which were soaked in water, scraped to remove hair, stretched on wooden frames to dry, and then bleached with lime the finished product became known as parchment. In Europe, however, the acceptance of paper was still centuries away. Muslim artisans decorated their books with elaborate borders and illustrations and these are often defined as illuminated manuscripts. They also made extensive copies of western philosophers like Aristotle (384-322 BCE) which preserved many of his works long before they were appreciated in the west. ![]() When you find one, double-click the message to open it. Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu Recensions of the White Yajurveda Recension Nameīihar, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, North India The lost recensions of the White Yajurveda, mentioned in other texts of ancient India, include Jabala, Baudhya, Sapeyi, Tapaniya, Kapola, Paundravatsa, Avati, Paramavatika, Parasara, Vaineya, Vaidheya, Katyayana and Vaijayavapa. There are two (nearly identical) surviving recensions of the Vajasaneyi Samhita (VS): Vajasaneyi Madhyandina and Vajasaneyi Kanva. The name Vajasaneyi is derived from Vajasaneya, the patronymic of Yajnavalkya, and the founder of the Vajasaneyi branch. The samhita in the Shukla Yajurveda is called the Vajasaneyi Samhita. In contrast to Shukla Yajurveda, the four surviving recensions of Krishna Yajurveda are very different versions. These two recensions are nearly the same, except for a few differences. Only two recensions of the Shukla Yajurveda have survived, Madhyandina and Kanva, and others are known by name only because they are mentioned in other texts. The Yajurveda text includes Shukla Yajurveda of which about 16 recensions are known, while the Krishna Yajurveda may have had as many as 86 recensions. Georg Feuerstein suggest that the dates given to most of these texts is far too late. The scholarly consensus dates the bulk of the Yajurveda and Atharvaveda hymns to the early Indian Iron Age, after c. The core text of the Yajurveda falls within the classical Mantra period of Vedic Sanskrit at the end of the 2nd millennium BCE - younger than the Rigveda, and roughly contemporary with the Atharvaveda, the Rigvedic Khilani, and the Sāmaveda. Carl Olson states that Yajurveda is a text of "mantras (sacred formulas) that are repeated and used in rituals". Ralph Griffith interprets the name to mean "knowledge of sacrifice or sacrificial texts and formulas". Michael Witzel interprets Yajurveda to mean a "knowledge text of prose mantras" used in Vedic rituals. Johnson states yajus means "(mostly) prose formulae or mantras, contained in the Yajur Veda, which are muttered". Monier-Williams translates yajus as "religious reverence, veneration, worship, sacrifice, a sacrificial prayer, formula, particularly mantras uttered in a peculiar manner at a sacrifice". Yajurveda is a compound Sanskrit word, composed of ya jus (यजुस्) and Veda (वेद). Offerings are typically ghee (clarified butter), grains, aromatic seeds, and cow milk. Yajurveda text describes formula and mantras to be uttered during sacrificial fire (yajna) rituals, shown. Two of the oldest surviving manuscript copies of the Shukla Yajurveda sections have been discovered in Nepal and Western Tibet, and these are dated to the 12th-century CE. These include the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, the Isha Upanishad, the Taittiriya Upanishad, the Katha Upanishad, the Shvetashvatara Upanishad and the Maitri Upanishad. The youngest layer of Yajurveda text includes the largest collection of primary Upanishads, influential to various schools of Hindu philosophy. The middle layer includes the Satapatha Brahmana, one of the largest Brahmana texts in the Vedic collection. The earliest and most ancient layer of Yajurveda samhita includes about 1,875 verses, that are distinct yet borrow and build upon the foundation of verses in Rigveda. The black Yajurveda has survived in four recensions, while two recensions of white Yajurveda have survived into the modern times. The term "black" implies "the un-arranged, unclear, motley collection" of verses in Yajurveda, in contrast to the "white" which implies the "well arranged, clear" Yajurveda. The Yajurveda is broadly grouped into two – the "black" or "dark" ( Krishna) Yajurveda and the "white" or "bright" ( Shukla) Yajurveda. The exact century of Yajurveda's composition is unknown, and estimated by Witzel to be between 1200 and 800 BCE, contemporaneous with Samaveda and Atharvaveda. Yajurveda is one of the four Vedas, and one of the scriptures of Hinduism. An ancient Vedic Sanskrit text, it is a compilation of ritual-offering formulas that were said by a priest while an individual performed ritual actions such as those before the yajna fire. The Yajurveda ( Sanskrit: यजुर्वेद, yajurveda, from yajus meaning "worship", and veda meaning "knowledge") is the Veda primarily of prose mantras for worship rituals. ![]() These parts, along with other resources collected while on missions or through mission rewards, can be used to forge or upgrade new weapons and armor which then can be used in against more powerful monsters and tackle more difficult missions, completing the compulsion loop. The player can equip weapons, armor, and items most beneficial towards completing a given mission, and if successful, the Hunter is awarded in both in-game money ("zenny") and loot representing parts from the monster. Rather, the Hunter's abilities are instead defined by the specific weapons and armor selected. Unlike traditional computer role-playing games, a player's Hunter does not grow and has no intrinsic statistics or attributes whatsoever. The core feature of Monster Hunter is its compulsion loop. Players take the role of a Hunter that serves to help protect the villages and bases from these monsters, typically aiding in researching these. In the setting's less populated regions, monsters roam the landscape and threaten small villages or research bases that have been established to study the ruins and these monsters. Monster Hunter takes place in a shared low fantasy setting, where the human-like species have a pre-industrial level of technology such as steam power, but continue to study the ruins of a long-past advanced civilization. World became the best-selling Monster Hunter game within three days of its release, and became Capcom's single best-selling video game of all time with 21 million sales as of July 5, 2022, including more than 70% outside of Japan. However, with Monster Hunter: World (2018), Capcom aimed to attract a global audience using the power of advanced home gaming consoles and computers and released the title simultaneously worldwide. Monster Hunter has been critically well-received in Western markets, but had generally languished in sales, in part due to the game's steep learning curve. The early games in the series principally sold well in Japan and other Asian countries, popularized by the series' use of ad hoc multiplayer features on portable consoles. All main series titles feature multiplayer (usually up to four players cooperatively), but can also be played single player.Īs of September 30, 2022, the game series has sold 88 million units worldwide, and is Capcom's second best-selling series following Resident Evil. As part of its core gameplay loop, players use loot gained from slaying monsters, gathering resources, and quest rewards to craft improved weapons, armor, and other items that allow them to face more powerful monsters. The player takes the role of a Hunter, slaying or trapping large monsters across various landscapes as part of quests given to them by locals, with some quests involving the gathering of a certain item or items, which may put the Hunter at risk of facing various monsters. ![]() The games are primarily action role-playing games. Mpeg Transport Streams are part of the AVCHD bundle, and they belong in the bundle, not separate if you can help it. The elements in the AVCHD bundle is not designed to be separated - there is essential metadata in there, for example MTS files are NOT shots but rather elements of shots - if you have a long shot it will be divided into multiple MTS. MTS are h264 (well at least in theory) as well as compressed audio. Both audio and video are efficiently stored in there… but almost no NLE can play them back completely efficiently. In FCPX it make LOOK like it is playing back a few files efficiently, but try to deal with more than a handful of shots and you will enter molasses land. In MTS, Audio is as much as a problem as video. Therefore, you need both Audio and Video to be rewrapped and or transcoded from a MTS file, as well as injecting metadata – timecode for example. Fortunately FCPX will do all this transcoding automatically on import of AVCHD! Sweet, that is if you use the Import dialog. If your coming straight from the card, its easy. If you are first copying a card to a drive, then make sure you get the entire folder structure of the card, or use something like excellent Hedge for this task. Using the Import window, FCPX will wrap them in a mov container and also transcode the audio intro straight PCM audio so it plays back as smooth as butter. If you dig in you’ll see your files sizes are slightly larger than what was on the camera card, but that is because of uncompressed audio.įigure 2: The AVCHD bundle that contained the above MTS files, but now imported via FCPX import. It is now as it should be a single 42 minute clip from the recorded lecture. It’s 8.06GB, so 2.5 GB larger because of transcoding it’s 6 channels of MTS/AAC audio to uncompressed. You can bring those into FCPX and optimized, but in my testing, creating optimized media of MTS files in FCPX, doesn’t work perfectly with every MTS file. It might be the different flavors of MTS (still investigating this), or could be that audio is being passed through when making optimized and proxy. Regardless if you do have a stray MTS file the best option is to spend a few dollars to save some headaches and purchase Clip Wrap, or Edit Ready, to rewrap them properly (even in just rewrapping ClipWrap will transcode the audio into beautifully efficient uncompressed). ![]() So there is no need to EVERy goto ProRes for AVCHD? Probably not, but rewrapped AVCHD h264 might still not give you the performance your looking for in FCPX. For example, malformed h264 files are all over the place because h264 is a decoding standing not an encoding one - you can therefore can get widely different results from different compression methods. Malformed h264 can give color shifts, bad performance or export errors in FCPX. Is AVCHD h264 malformed? I don’t know, but it seems to take a bit more processing power than the Canon DSLR h264 footage I edit with most of the time. ![]() ![]() Therefore I would attempt to edit FCPX imported AVCHD and see how it goes with your project.
